Barn Conversion, White Stiles

This barn conversion at Gorran was originally designed as a holiday cottage for another client.

Paul and Kate approached me to see if they could obtain full residential planning permission. Originally the barn was just a concrete block built structure, so nowadays it would probably not be supported for conversion, but under Restormel Council’s former policy it was acceptable. Also, the original holiday planning permission was still valid as the previous client had started the work. Therefore, with the help of planning consultant Ivan Tomlin who prepared a planning statement, permission was granted. During this process the layout was remodelled to suit the conversion's new use as a home.

Building Regulation approval was obtained by us for the amended plans, and site inspections were carried out during construction in order to issue an architectural certificate.

Paul arranged for local stone mason Andy Gent to face the original blockwork with Cornish natural stone. The oak windows and doors were made by the client, joiner Paul Grimmett, himself. The back elevation is slate hung, as seen in the photographs.

Status: Paul and his wife have moved into their new home. Looks great!

Little Water House

This project was for the conversion of an existing redundant stable block to a holiday cottage, specifically suited to accommodate disabled persons and children with special needs, such as Autism.

Grade 2 House & Barns Refurbishment

The property is a detached Grade II Listed house which was originally constructed in c1710. This property stands on the site of an ancient Cluniac Priory. Little of the original building remains, although some early carved stones have been excavated by previous owners.
