Refurbishment of Grade II Listed Building

As part of a series of major refurbishment works to buildings within the curtilage of this Grade II Listed Building, the old laundry and cottage underwent refurbishment and extension and the client also requested reinstatement of an unused and part dilapidated stable block.

The work required detail drawings of all replacement items, such as doors and windows, to comply with the Local Authority Planning Department and Conservation Officer requirements for the building. Replacement doors were of the traditional design of boarded, ledged and braced timber construction, with ironmongery to match existing items. The windows were made to match existing and have Georgian glazed panels, with the frame sitting on a Delabole slate sill.

The roof was refurbished with reclaimed Delabole slate in diminishing courses, with mitred hips. Original sections of the building walls were retained and re-pointed with lime mortar. New wall sections, as required, were built of blockwork, finished with a white lime cement render.

The rows of slate dovecot openings on the rear elevation of the stable are particularly special and were retained.

Status: Building works completed.

As part of an ongoing farm diversification programme, this project was to convert one of many redundant stone barns to a holiday cottage.

Grade II House & Barns Refurbishment

The property is a detached Grade II Listed house which was originally constructed in c1710. This property stands on the site of an ancient Cluniac Priory. Little of the original building remains, although some early carved stones have been excavated by previous owners.
